A hotter-than-expected consumer price index on Tuesday sent stocks reeling, with the Dow posting its biggest drop in a year. Stocks bounced back over the next two days, helped by a softer retail sales report , only to slump again on Friday's hot producer price index for January. As we said this week, we're not overly concerned with the hotter-than-expected inflationary readings. Earnings season picks back up for the Club next week, with four holdings set to report quarterly results. As a subscriber to the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer, you will receive a trade alert before Jim makes a trade.

Goldman warns these are the most crowded AI-related stocks

These stocks riding the surge of interest in artificial intelligence are the most crowded trades, Goldman Sachs warned. The top five most crowded trades include Autodesk, a design software company; Arista Networks, a network equipment company; and Advanced Micro Devices, a chipmaker. Autodesk is considered the most crowded trade, according to Goldman Sachs. But Goldman Sachs does not anticipate much runway left for the stock, just 3% upside to its price target. The stock is up 23% in 2024, but can fall 27% based on Goldman Sachs' price target.

In fact, "data centers are taking a disproportionate amount of incremental capacity being added by electrical equipment manufacturers." Much of the energy data centers consume is used to train AI models as well as to run them. Natural resources, power supply, funding — the necessities that allow for the existence of the data centers — aren't exactly infinite. The company's business took off last year as data centers began to need more electrical equipment capacity and generated more heat. JPMorgan has a neutral rating on GE with a $124 price target, 5.5% below the stock's Monday close.

Let 'em ride: Several of 2023's best-performing stocks were grossly undervalued at the beginning of the year. So while investors recognized the company could deliver massive earnings and free cash flow, they were afraid Zuckerberg had gone off the reservation. The stock sports topline growth, substantial margins, a strong balance sheet, substantial free cash flow, and a moat around its business. It's time to hedge some of those gains (or take profits): The second best-performing stock in the Russell 1000 for 2023 is Coinbase (COIN) . If you own, but don't want to sell, consider purchasing the March $45/$35 put spread as a particle hedge, as illustrated below.

But according to Deepwater Asset Management, there's one under-the-radar AI stock that will be essential for the long-term infrastructure rollout of artificial intelligence. "An under-the-radar AI stock is Vertiv," Doug Clinton, managing partner at Deepwater, told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia" last week. The company's specialty is graphics processing units, or GPUs, which have become the preferred chips for the large AI models that underpin generative AI software. "We think [Vertiv has] a great tailwind for the next three to five years as this AI hardware buildout continues," Clinton added. Alphabet Alphabet , which Clinton described as Deepwater's largest AI holding, has a "great catalyst" for the latter half of this year: the launch of its latest AI model Gemini.

How does a government shutdown affect the stock market? As far as directly affecting the stock market, however, it would be unusual for a government shutdown to be deeply detrimental. According to Evercore senior managing director Julian Emanuel, "the history of government shutdowns has been largely irrelevant for the stock market. It didn't in 1954 and it didn't in 2020, two 'tight government' years," Emanuel wrote. "But when stocks play politics like they are now and will be for another 13+ months, it does mean more volatility."

Analysts at Morgan Stanley named companies that have quantified how much money they can make — or save — from using generative artificial intelligence (AI). While firms like Alphabet , Meta and Microsoft are on Morgan Stanley's list, non-tech companies are also financially benefiting from using generative AI, the bank said. Here's what some of the reporting companies said about how much they're making or saving by using AI or generative AI, according to Morgan Stanley's note. Alphabet said: "Our new generative AI offerings are expanding our total addressable market and winning new customers. We noted 47 quotes from management teams at 2Q23 relating to productivity gains or efficiency in employee training," Morgan Stanley said.

Vertiv is well-positioned for gains as its margins recover due to the artificial intelligence boom, according to Bank of America. Analyst Andrew Obin upgraded the data center servicer's shares to buy from underperform and raised his price target 54% to $40 from $26. Artificial intelligence adoption within data centers adds incremental demand for Vertiv's thermal management products," Obin wrote in a Wednesday note. Vertiv's strong portfolio in thermal management , which helps protect IT spaces and data centers, also leaves it better-positioned than its peers to see upsides from AI tailwinds, Obin said. Adoption of AI will drive more graphics processing unit chips into data centers, generating more heat and requiring thermal management, said Obin.

The data center industry is booming and eager for land, which can push up property prices in residential areas. The partnership aims to develop a proof-of-concept for how low-carbon fuel cells can provide green power for data centers. Fuel cells are recognized as a cleaner and quieter power solution that can reduce the strain on urban power grids. Fuel cells can help reduce the data center industry's reliance on natural gas and diesel-powered generators, he added. In the webinar, Summers emphasized how important it is that any solution for low-carbon fuel cells turns into an "open standard."
So, how can data centers provide more computing power while reducing their carbon footprint? "The RISE partnership will help us see the bigger picture of sustainability," he said. "We are creating greenhouses and vertical farming to reuse the heat and analyzing the data from medium-sized data centers." Other areas for improvement in data centers' environmental performance include making hardware and software more energy efficient, said Tor. Vertiv and RISE are also members of the E2P2 Tech Consortium, leading low-carbon fuel cell development to power data centers.
Activist Commentary: Starboard is a very successful activist investor and has extensive experience helping companies focus on operational efficiency and margin improvement. Starboard sees Vertiv as a great business in a solid industry with secular tailwinds – more data is being generated every day requiring more data centers. After going public, Vertiv delivered solid results, which allowed management to continue to focus on revenue growth, rather than operating margins. This is a typical situation for Starboard: a private company CEO running a public company like a private company leading to underperforming operating margins. Both Starboard and Vertiv seem to be on the same page.
In the data center world, there are already 2.9 gigawatts of new data center capacity currently under construction. To slow the environmental effects of this growth, critical infrastructure providers are working with greater urgency to develop high-performing products and solutions that use less water and more renewable energy. While our industry has made significant strides in recent years to improve the energy efficiency of data centers, the work is far from over. Better product design for more purpose-driven resultsTo address the challenge of enabling data center growth with less energy consumption, Vertiv has worked to improve its internal operations to deliver solutions that help contribute to customer goals in these areas. The path toward a more efficient data center will require much more than customer-manufacturer interactions.
